The Sweet Benefits of Raw Organic Honey and 3 fun ways to use it!

Nature's Golden Sweetener
Nowadays, it can be hard to find foods that aren’t stripped of all their natural benefits that are delicious and functional. Raw organic honey checks all the boxes. It is so much more than just a natural sweetener; it’s a nutrient-rich, enzyme-packed gift from the bees, one that’s been treasured for thousands of years for both its flavor and healing qualities.
What is Raw Organic Honey?
Raw organic honey is honey when it is still in its most natural form. It comes straight from the hive, not processed or heated. The minimal handling allows the honey to maintain all of its natural enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Compared to commercial honeys that do go through heating and filtration processes, raw honey is able to retain all of its wonderful benefits and flavor.
How is Honey Made?
The honey creation process has three main stages. It starts with foraging, where bees leave their hives to find nectar, the sugary liquid found within flowers. The bees collect this liquid and start step two. Back at the hive, the forager bee passes the nectar to another bee, where they work on breaking down the complex sugars in the honey to a similar form. The nectar is then deposited into the wax cells of the honeycomb within the hive. The bees then fan the comb with their wings to evaporate moisture. This turns the watery nectar into sticky honey!
Health benefits
Raw organic honey is more than just a sweet treat; it’s nature’s wellness booster. Packed with antioxidants, enzymes, and trace nutrients, it offers both everyday and long-term health support.
- Immune System Support – Raw honey contains polyphenols and flavonoids, natural plant compounds that help fight oxidative stress in the body. Its antibacterial and antiviral properties can help the immune system ward off colds and seasonal bugs.
- Digestive Aid – The enzymes in raw honey (like amylase and invertase) assist in breaking down carbohydrates, which may ease digestion. Honey also has prebiotic properties, supporting healthy gut bacteria.
- Soothing for Sore Throats & Coughs – A spoonful of raw honey can coat the throat, easing irritation and reducing coughing – so much so that it’s been recommended as a natural cough remedy by the World Health Organization.
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties – Chronic inflammation is linked to many health issues, from heart disease to arthritis. The antioxidants in raw honey help reduce inflammation and support overall wellness.
- Heart Health – Raw honey may help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and support healthy triglyceride levels when used as part of a balanced diet.
- Natural Energy Source – The natural glucose in honey offers quick energy, while the fructose provides a slower release, giving you sustained fuel for workouts, hikes, or busy days without spiking your blood sugar.
- Rich in Trace Nutrients – Raw honey contains small amounts of minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, which all contribute to healthy cellular function and overall vitality.
The Problems with Processed Honey
When honey is processed, it is typically done through high-heat pasteurization and ultra-filtration. This, unfortunately, leads to most of its natural goodness being lost. The heat destroys many of the beneficial enzymes. Antioxidants, which protect the body from oxidative stress, are also diminished. Ultra-filtration can strip away pollen, which not only removes a natural source of vitamins and minerals, but also erases the very “fingerprint” that shows where the honey came from.
What’s left is often just a sweet syrup: shelf-stable and clear, but far removed from the nutrient-rich, complex food bees work so hard to create. This is why, at Elemental, we choose to use raw, organic honey, which means you’re getting it in its purest form with all the natural enzymes, antioxidants, and floral notes intact. It’s the difference between eating something simply sweet and fueling your body with nature’s original, functional food.
